Rehabilitation of “Soufari Serai” Building in Ioannina
Greece
Rehabilitation of “Soufari Serai” Building for the purpose of accommodating the State’s General Archives of Ioannina, Prefecture of Attica, Greece
Soufari Serai building, located in the center of the Castle of Ioannina will house the General Archives of Ioannina City.
The main building is a rectangular, two-story building (with general dimensions: length 45.5m, width 30m, height 12m ) in the middle courtyard with arched staircase on the southeast side. The building has 2.000m² total area.
On the east side there are detached rooms, independent from the main building, near to the wall, while in the northern and southern side there are shelters for the needs of the military unit vehicles which had commandeered the area.
The main building is built by the typical principles.
In fact, it is about four two-storey brick buildings jointed in one. It had undergone extensive alterations, mainly in the openings of the ground floor.
The are tree entrance points to the ground floor. Two entrances on the opposite narrow sides of the building and the third one on the south-west side of the building. The structural morphology of the building on the ground floor, is the juxtaposition of four rooms that are connected internally with three walls of pessaries (dimension 1,70 x 2, 00m per 5.00 m)
The 1st floor was added 2 or 3 years after the construction of the ground floor. The access to the floor is done by an external staircase on the north east side of the building. The internal organization of the floor is similar to that of the ground floor.
